Flooding in York County can occur during and after a heavy and/or prolonged rain event, but is most often the product of tidal surge associated with tropical storms, hurricanes, and Nor'easters.
Turn Around Don't Drown - Being in a Flooded Area
Do not walk through moving water - drowning is the number one cause of flood deaths. As little as six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet.
Do not drive through a flooded area - most people drown in their cars than anywhere else.
Do not drive around road barriers; the road or bridge may be washed out.
Stay away from power lines and electrical wires, turn off your electricity when you return home, watch for animals, especially snakes, be alert for gas leaks, carbon monoxide exhaust kills (generators).
Most homeowners insurance policies do not offer protection against flood losses.
