Digital Library Spotlights: Meet Kanopy

Today we will spotlight Kanopy, a video streaming service provided by the library.

You may be safeguarding yourself by staying in, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the library! Your free York County Public Library Card gets you access to a world of digital resources. Over the next few weeks we will be featuring them right here, on Off the Beaten Shelf.

Today we'll focus on Kanopy, the library's free video streaming service!

What is Kanopy?
Kanopy is an award-winning film streaming service that offers over 30,000 of the world’s best films, including documentaries, film festival favorites, indie and classic films, and world cinema. York County Public Library cardholders can play 10 titles per month with a 72 hour loan period.

How do I sign up?
To sign up for Kanopy, you will want to first visit the following link: You should see a screen similar to what is displayed below.

Create an Account Today!

  • To get started, click the ADD LIBRARY CARD button.
  • On the next page, enter your York County Public Library card number in the library card number box and click Continue.
  • On the next page, you will be asked to complete the sign up process by creating an account. Your account can be created using your Google or Facebook login, or can be done directly on Kanopy using your email address and password. Your password will need to be at least 6 characters.
  • Whichever method you chose, please be sure t write down your sign in information for future reference.

After creating your account, you’ll receive a verification email in your inbox. Click on the link in this email to verify your email address. You're ready to start watching! Click on Watch Now on the welcome screen to start browsing.

Need a Library Card?
If you live in or around York County, Virginia, we now have a new online library card application that will give you access to our new Digital Library Card. Temporary digital card numbers will be issued to those that meet our requirements so you can still enjoy your library and our digital library resources even if you didn't have a card before we closed.
