Summer reading returns to the York County Public Library in June! This year's theme is Imagine Your Story, in which we celebrate all kinds of stories. With that in mind, our librarians have created lists of suggestions of some of our favorite books — both physical and digital — available for you to check out from York County Public Library. We will feature these lists here throughout the month of June.
Today we'll highlight our favorites books that are classic stories. Not only do we still read these stories today, the tropes from them are incorporated into all kinds of modern stories. See our favorites below.
Classic Book Suggestions for Adults
- Invisible Man by Ralph EllisonInvisible Man
Summary: The nameless narrator of the novel describes growing up in a black community in the South, attending a Negro college from which he is expelled, moving to New York and becoming the chief spokesman of the Harlem branch of "the Brotherhood", and retreating amid violence and confusion to the basement lair of the Invisible Man he imagines himself to be.
- Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Summary: Jane Eyre-orphaned, unloved, and confined in Lowood boarding school-never loses her desire for "real knowledge of life." She makes her way into the world as a governess, but requires all of her intelligence and courage to deal with a series of betrayals and revelations that upend her settled existence.
- The Odyssey by Homer
Summary: The Odyssey is the original hero's journey, following Odysseus as he tries to survive the terrors of the ancient world long enough to get home. In the myths and legends retold here, Fagles has captured the energy and poetry of Homer's original in a bold, contemporary idiom, and given us an Odyssey to read aloud, to savor, and to treasure for its sheer lyrical mastery.
