YCPL Staff Note: We are proud to partner with Girl Scout Troop 4047 to offer this blog post, as well as an activity kit distribution and instructional YouTube video. Now we will turn it over to the Cadette Girl Scouts.

Hi! We are Lana and Audrey, Cadette Girl Scouts in Yorktown troop 4047. We are working on our Silver Award, which is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. Our project is to help others find joy even when things are rough.
This year we learned about the “Science of Happiness.” We learned that scientist say there are three keys to happiness:
- pleasure (doing things you enjoy)
- engagement (feeling interested in your activities and connected to others)
- meaning (feeling like what you do matters).
Most people try to find happiness through pleasure but studies show it is the least likely to bring them joy. We found that painting kindness rocks for others is fun and giving them to others made us feel good. We decided to share this project with our community in the hopes of spreading lots of joy.
During the week of March 22 through March 27, you can pick up pre-painted rocks to decorate at home from the Tabb and Yorktown Libraries. Available for all ages, the kits can be picked up at the the Youth Services desks at either branch. Or, you can paint your own rocks and follow along with us on our Rock Painting video posted on the York County Public Library YouTube channel. Together we can spread a little joy and happiness. Happy painting!
