Editor's Note: Visual Reads is a monthly series focusing on the York County Public Library's ever growing collection of graphic novels. Whether you are partial to super heroes or love to see a well-done adaptation of your favorite novel, we've got plenty to choose from.
While many people know and love Douglas Adams for his tongue-in-cheek Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, many are unaware of his other works. One such tale has seen a recent resurgence with a graphic novel revival and a BBC television reboot in the works. This is, of course, the wildly chaotic Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
From the Publisher:
"Dirk Gently: a detective with a belief in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things, a unique relationship with the laws of probability and physics, and a love of cats and pizza. In his first-ever comic series, Dirk has been forced to leave his beloved England behind, coming to the too-sunny, too-cheery, and altogether too-bizarre-even-for-Dirk city of San Diego, California, where he gets embroiled in three separate (or are they?) cases involving reincarnated Egyptians, golden cell phones, and copycat killers."
Gently, an amusing and scatter-brained character who leads readers on a convoluted trip through several mysteries that all seem connected, is a fish-out-of-water in the brightly colored San Diego. Luckily for him, and the readers who may be put off by his frenetic energy, he meets a cast of characters who help him out, whether they want to or not. Gently sets up shop in a mystery-themed coffee shop, where he discovers his newfound friends, and even an eager assistant. From there, the mysteries seem to fall in his lap one after the other.
This graphic novel is perfect for fans of Douglas Adams, Doctor Who, and classic hard-boiled detectives such as Dick Tracy. Visit the online catalog to reserve your copy today!
