May craft kits celebrate Harry Potter

Posted to Off the Beaten Shelf on May 3, 2021 at 10:13 AM by Elizabeth Land

Harry Potter craft kits will be available at both libraries beginning May 3.

Craft kits return to the library this month! With kits for both elementary schoolers and middle/high schoolers, we've got something for every Harry Potter fan. But you don't have to be a wizard to create magic. Just grab one of our kits by stopping by the Youth Services Department at either branch beginning today, May 3. Please note that the Middle/High School kits contain small pieces and is not appropriate for young wizards. Kits will be available while supplies last. For more information, call Tabb Library at 757-890-5110 or call Yorktown Library at 757-890-3236.

Not everyone has read the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, but most people at least recognize the iconic name. The 7-novel series has spawned movies, a Broadway play and even its own section in the Universal Studios theme park. But it all started with the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It's never too late to experience the series. The York County Public Library carries copies of every book in the series in both physical, digital and audio formats. Just visit our online catalog to reserve your copy today.

Science kits are back at the York County Public Library! This month's kit explores engineering and bridge design. Different shapes have different strengths. So, put on your thinking cap and think about what makes a strong bridge and what makes a weak bridge.

Galloping Gerdie

The strongest type of bridge is a stone arch. However, these bridges are expensive to build and are limited in size and height. They are not the best choice when building over a very wide river that has a lot of big boat traffic. A suspension bridge is an economical way to build and they are easy to maintain and update over time. However, they must be built in specific way. Take a look at this video of a poorly designed suspension bridge:
