Science Kit: Engineer a Bridge

Posted to Off the Beaten Shelf on March 8, 2021 at 12:00 AM by Elizabeth Land

Science kits are back at the York County Public Library! This month's kit explores engineering and bridge design. Different shapes have different strengths. So, put on your thinking cap and think about what makes a strong bridge and what makes a weak bridge.

The strongest type of bridge is a stone arch. However, these bridges are expensive to build and are limited in size and height. They are not the best choice when building over a very wide river that has a lot of big boat traffic. A suspension bridge is an economical way to build and they are easy to maintain and update over time. However, they must be built in specific way. Take a look at this video of a poorly designed suspension bridge:

News Flash: Science Kits Coming to Your Library

Posted to Off the Beaten Shelf on March 1, 2021 at 12:00 AM by Elizabeth Land

Science Kits to be distributed at the library March 8-13, 2021

The library science kits are back and will be arriving at the Tabb and Yorktown Library on Monday, March 8!

This month, we will focus on engineering. Did you know that bridges have to be built in a certain way to ensure their strength and stability? In this kit, we will build our engineering skills by creating three different bridges and testing their strength. Kits will be available while supplies last beginning Monday, March 8. Kits are for children ages 5-12.

Can't make it to the library to grab your kit? We'll post the content right here on the same day the kits are available.

Questions? Call the Tabb Library at 757-890-5110 or call the Yorktown Library at 757-890-3236.
