[ARCHIVED] York County Celebrates Earth Day

York County Celebrates Earth Day, Saturday, April 21

Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day. But that doesn’t mean we can’t begin celebrating now! In fact, in York County, we believe that every day is Earth Day. To honor this year’s event, the county has a few environmentally-friendly events for residents.

Saturday, April 21 – Join us from 8 a.m. to noon at the Waste Management Center (145 Goodwin Neck Road) to help us celebrate Earth Day. Activities include:

  • Free tour of the Waste Management Center to see how it all works
  • Plant a tree to take with you for your yard
  • Games for all ages
  • Information on how you can be a clean-up superhero!

And, just a short drive down the road in the Public Works complex (105 Service Drive), Mosquito Control will be collecting old tires. Staff will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to collect your tires and to keep them from being used by mosquitoes as breeding grounds. You may bring up to five tires per household for free disposal.

Saturday, April 28 – Bring your old prescription medicines to the Drug Take Back event at the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office D.A.R.E. location in Washington Square Shopping Center (5338-D George Washington Memorial Highway). Drop off your meds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Deputies will be available to collect these items from you.

Also at this location, protect yourself by bringing in documents and records for shredding from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This free shredding opportunity will accept up to five boxes of paperwork per person. You don’t need to remove stapes or paper clips, but please do not include any plastic bags (they may damage the equipment).

We will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Peninsula Food Bank. One or two items go a long way.

Keep an eye out for more information coming soon about our spring clean-ups!

For more information about the Drug Take Back, please call the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office at (757) 890-3630. For more information about the other Earth Day events, please call the Waste Management Center at (757) 890-3780.
