Come to New Quarter ParkHello All,
The BioBlitz begins this Saturday, September 12! New Quarter Park is hosting a 8-day BioBlitz event as part of the National Parks for Pollinators campaign hosted by the National Recreation and Parks Association. The BioBlitz raises public awareness of the importance of pollinators and positions parks as national leaders in advancing pollinator health. Participants will take photos of pollinators found throughout New Quarter Park with their phones, using the iNaturalist app. More information, maps of the park, and instructions on how to use the iNaturalist app can be found on our New Quarter Park webpage on our website www.yorkcounty.gov/parksandrec. Show off the beautiful pictures you take with the York County Beautification Committee, which is hosting a photo contest for the best pictures of pollinators (ex: flowers, trees, bees, birds, butterflies!). Winning photos will appear in the 2021 Beautiful York County calendar. Photos are judged by the York County Beautification Committee based on the quality of the image and its adherence to the calendar’s theme. Thirteen winners will be selected to appear in the calendar – one for each month and the cover - with each winner receiving $100! All York County citizens are eligible to participate (submissions must be made by individuals who are not photographers by trade, and business photos are not accepted). For more information on the photo contest go to www.yorkcounty.gov/contest
The Logy Bear 8K, Gummy Bear 5K, and 1 Mile Fun Run - September 26 - Join us for a beautiful day of running! All proceeds benefit the LL12 Foundation in memory of Logan Koontz, one of three Tabb High School students who was killed in a car accident leaving the homecoming dance this past October. The foundation raises money for scholarships for student athletes, helps with camp and equipment fees, supports the ROTC program, and educates teens on the importance of safe riding and driving precautions. Both the Logy Bear 8K and Gummy Bear 5K start in New Quarter Park, continuing on to Lakeshead Drive, then looping through the Queens Lake neighborhood, and finishing at New Quarter Park for the 5K. The runners in the 8K will continue on the fire trail and back to the main road to finish. T-shirts, raffle/door prizes, post race snacks and refreshments will be available to racers. Official times will be tracked for the 8K, which is also a CRR Grand Prix and Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix event. The first run will begin at 8 a.m. For more information and to register go to https://runsignup.com/Race/VA/Williamsburg/TaketheCrownatYorktownTheLogyBear5KandGummyBear1MileFunRun.
Movie in the Park - September 26 - The movie starts within 15 minutes after sunset (7 p.m.). This program is a great way to get the family outdoors for a fun event while practicing social distancing. Movie-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Concessions are available at each movie showing. This month's movie will be The Lion King (2019). A young lion returns to reclaim the throne that was stolen from him and his father by his treacherous and fratricidal uncle after spending his childhood in exile under the care of a friendly warthog and meerkat. The movie will be shown in the softball/multi-purpose field area close to the NQP Park Office. Limited parking spaces close to the field. See you at the park, Michael Wilcox Recreation Supervisor I
