Yorktown’s Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival is tomorrow – Saturday, May 1 – and tickets have been selling fast!  In fact, the 3:30 shift is SOLD OUT, but tickets remain for the first one from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., perfect for a lunch of BBQ, seafood and other festival favorites along with brews from a dozen local craft breweries.  Four of the hottest blues bands in Hampton Roads are set to perform.  More details are available online.  And on Sunday, stroll down the Riverwalk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the eighth annual Art at the River Juried Art Show! Incredible, one-of-a-kind work will be on display and artists will gladly chat with you about their items and sell you a piece or two.  Forty-three local and regional artists were carefully selected to participate and Juried Art Show prizes will be awarded, so don’t forget to cast your vote in the People’s Choice Award. Food and beverages will be available from Coastal Thirst and all Historic Yorktown restaurants will be open. The Fifes and Drums of York Town perform at 10 a.m., followed by music until 3.  This event is FREE!  Visit the website for details.  These events are a great way to celebrate National Travel & Tourism Week – May 2-8 – and experience the work of our Tourism Development staff. The week spotlights the collective strength of the U.S. travel industry and the critical role that travel will play in bringing back our vibrant communities, restoring the economy, rebuilding our workforce, and reconnecting America. Cheers to everyone in Tourism Development who are dedicated to promoting Yorktown.

Special Recreation Camp

A Few More Notes for the Week…..We recently celebrated National Volunteer Week and think our volunteers are the BEST!  York County’s volunteers serve as coaches and camp assistants, participate in litter clean-up events, and also serve on our many boards, commissions, and committees!  In fact, right now, applications are needed for the Historic Yorktown Design Committee (must be a resident of the historic area). Check out the application online for serving on a board and, if you would like to serve as a volunteer elsewhere, email us and be sure to specify your area of interest!     Dominion Energy is asking the public – particularly those who live within a 10 mile radius of the Surry Power Station – to take a five-minute survey online to help the utility and local emergency managers understand our citizens’ personal emergency safety plans. Survey results will be used to help enhance emergency planning and response operations.    This week, York-Poquoson Social Services, in partnership with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, held a ribbon-cutting for its Little Free Libraries where a reader can pick up a free book and leave one in its place! Two Little Libraries are located at 301 Goodwin Neck Road (one for adults and the other for children) with a third Little Library planned for Poquoson. Check out photos and video from Monday’s event on the County’s Facebook page.
