York County Invites the Community to Support Small Businesses During National Farmers Market Week

July 29, 2021

Yorktown Market Days joins 349 other markets across Virginia in celebrating National Farmers Market Week on Saturday, August 7 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. With six small family-owned and operated farms set up at Riverwalk Landing each week—shoppers are bound to find their go-to favorites and also get the opportunity to try new varieties of fruits and vegetables in addition to pasture-raised meats. Products from these farmers go through just a few hands—the farmers’ and customers’—before reaching the plate.
The first week in August is designated every summer to recognize the impact  farmers markets across the country have on their communities—by preserving farmland through economic viability and encouraging engagement between neighbors.
Yorktown’s award-winning offerings and waterfront location make it one of the most unique farmers markets in Hampton Roads. It is a one-stop shop for seasonal produce, farm meats and seafood, fresh poultry and eggs, artisan breads and scratch-made desserts, honey, jams, and sauces, flowers, plants, and herbs, coffee, tea, fresh-pressed juices, and wine, high-quality art, and even gourmet dog treats!

During this special market, more than 40 local vendors, food trucks, artists, and other local businesses will set up along the river.  The Fifes and Drums of Yorktown will perform on the Riverwalk Landing Performance Stage at 10 a.m. There will be free “I Love Farmers Markets” temporary tattoos passed out to children at the market and parents can learn more about a special coloring contest at the York County Information tent. Kids have until Friday, August 27, to return their finished work of art to Ben & Jerry’s Yorktown. Shop Owner Bob Deramo and his staff will select the top three submissions to receive a coupon for a complimentary frozen treat.
Yorktown Market Days has been serving the Peninsula for 15 years and has grown to include 33 Saturday markets in 2021, with three new winter markets in January, February, and March of this year. There are still many extended markets to look forward to during the fall and holiday season where free family fun includes kids activities such as a Virginia Living Museum Animal Show and a live pumpkin carving demonstration. Mark your calendars for the Fall Festival, First Responders Market, Maritime Market, Paws at the River, Harvest Festival, and Mistletoe Market. Dates and details can be found at www.yorktownmarketdays.com.

There is no charge for the market and it is held rain or shine. Free parking is available in several designated areas throughout Historic Yorktown. The Trolley runs daily in the summer from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. While most vendors accept credit cards, some only take cash. ATMs are conveniently located at Ben & Jerry’s and Yorktown Pub.
