 #1 2021-2022 York County Outstanding Youth Awards 

Outstanding Youth Awards

The Outstanding Youth Awards is to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding York County high school students! All nominees must be a York County resident, high school students in grades 9-12 (except 12th grade only for Overall Achievement). Students may attend public, private, or homeschool and be nominated for one of the following awards:  Compassion, Courage, Community Service, and Overall Achievement. A Selection Committee comprised of two Youth Commission members, one member of the Board of Supervisors, and one York County School Board member will review the nominations and choose one award winner in each of the four categories listed above. The four recipients of a $1,000 Educational Scholarship (for post-secondary college or trade school) will be formally recognized at the May 3, 2022, meeting of the York County Board of Supervisors. The deadline is February 18 at 5 pm.

 #2 Shelters & Fire Circle at New Quarter Park

With warmer weather coming soon, many folks start thinking about going out for picnics and spending time together with friends and family, but where will you go? New Quarter Park, located at 1000 Lakeshead Drive, Williamsburg, VA 23185, is the perfect location. There are 4 group shelters of various sizes and a fire circle, all available for you to rent. The shelters start at $50 for the day depending on the size, while our fire circle is only $25 for the day for residents. Rentals will be on a first-come, first-served basis and will be available until sunset; every day the park is open. In addition to our shelters, the park features various fun activities and amenities for you and your family (of any age) to enjoy together: basketball, volleyball, soccer, kickball, horseshoes, and cornhole, as well as disc golf. While you are at our park, having fun, be sure to let everyone know with our hashtag #YCParksOutdoorFun!

 #3 "A History Lesson to Remember" - Senior Center

“A History Lesson to Remember”, Friday, February 11 at 1 pm. Through the power of the spoken word, Dr. Rebertha Pope-Matthews provides what is described as an amazingly innovative project to highlight the contributions of African (Black) Americans to America from 1619 to 2020. "We Remember 1619," written by Dr. Pope-Matthews, is spoken to an electrifying musical track, produced, composed, and arranged by Rahni Song and features two great musicians Bill McGee (trumpet player), and Verrandall Tucker (percussionist and descendant of the first African baby born in the US in 1624). Dr. Pope-Matthews finds joy in her performances that are designed to be historical, cultural, inspirational, innovative, and empowering. Register by February 7.

 #4 AARP Tax-Aide Offered - Senior Center  

AARP Tax-Aide

Tax preparation will be held from February 1 through April 15 by appointment only at the Senior Center of York. These free services will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tax appointments can only be made when participants pick up a tax packet at the Senior Center during the above times when tax representatives are present and on-site at the Senior Center. After making an appointment on-site, participants should bring last year’s tax returns and all current tax information. If there is inclement weather, tax services may be delayed and or cancelled. Please wear masks and social distance. For more general information, please call the Senior Center at 890-3444.

 #5 Adult Softball League Registration

Registration online, February 1 - 28. Divisions will consist of Men’s League, co-ed Church, and co-ed Industrial. Games will be held at Chisman Creek Park and the McReynolds Athletic Complex.  The fee is $500 per team.
