Law Enforcement Building Rezoning on Board of Supervisors’ Agenda
The agenda for Tuesday’s (2/15) meeting is now available online. Among the items on this meeting’s agenda is the rezoning of two parcels where the Law Enforcement Building is being constructed. Public safety facilities and government offices are permitted as a matter of right in all zoning districts, so a rezoning is not required. Therefore, the site work was able to commence. The new building is an extension of the County’s Operations Center, which is zoning IL (Limited Industrial). So, it makes sense for the entire complex to be located in a single zoning district. Also, the height of the proposed building is 40 feet and the exising LB (Limited Business) zoning allows a maximum building height of 35 feet, whereas the proposed IL allows a maximum height of 60 feet. The County Administrator and Zoning Administrator believe this rezoning is important to follow the same standards as private development. 

Are You a Teen Interested in Serving on the Youth Commission?
The Board of Supervisors is currently seeking high school students interested in representing the County’s school-aged citizens by serving on the Youth Commission for the 2022-2023 school year.  Applications are due by 5 p.m. on March 25.  Interested students and their parents are invited to attend the Commission’s meeting on March 9^th at 6 p.m. in the Fire and Life Safety Meeting Room (301 Goodwin Neck Road) to observe and ask questions. The application is available on the Youth Commission website.

Draft 2022 Hampton Roads Hazard Mitigation Plan Online for Public Review
For several months, staff from Hampton Roads’ localities have been reviewing and updating the plan that provides guidance and strategies for managing the various hazards that impact our region. Two public sessions have been held to gather citizen input. The draft is now complete and available for review online. In addition, there is a public Zoom meeting at 6 p.m. on March 2 where citizens can learn about the Mitgation Action Plan prepared as part of this process and may comment on the draft plan.  The link to the document and Zoom instructions are available on the County’s website.

York/Poquoson Master Gardeners Offering $1,000 Scholarships
Graduating York County or Poquoson high school seniors accepted by a recognized and accredited community college, college or university are eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship. To qualify, the student’s field of study must be in horticulture, botany, or a related field. Current college students will also be considered for one of these scholarships if no graduating seniors are selected. More information and applications, due April 8, may be found on the York/Poquoson Extension website. 
 
Additional Notes for the Week…..York County offices and courts are closed Monday, February 21, in observance of Presidents’ Day.  Trash and recycling collections are not affected by the holiday.  Complete details are available in this week’s press release.    Don’t forget to register for the Great American Cleanup, March 25-26!
