A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in September. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age.  To register for these activities, sign up in person at the Senior Center or call (757) 890-3444. 

  • Talent Show – Friday, September 7, at 1 p.m.  Join us for the Senior Center’s first talent show.  We have lined up a variety of fun acts featuring music, drama, comedy, and more! Please come out and support our community talent. Refreshments will be provided. Sign up at the front desk by Thursday, September 6.
  • September Craft – Monday, September 10, at 10 a.m.  Come create a colorful keychain made out of “shrink dink” plastic with facilitator Kathy Wahl. Please register by Thursday, September 6.  Space is limited.
  • AARP Driver Safety Program - Monday, September 10, and Tuesday, September 11.  This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better. Cost is $15 for members of AARP and $20 for non-members.
  • “Stop the Bleed” – Friday, September 14, at 1 p.m.  The York-Poquoson Triad is sponsoring this awareness program to encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help someone in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.  The York County Department of Fire & Life Safety will facilitate this program to the senior community to promote knowledge and help others to make a commitment to learn important life-saving techniques. 
  • Culture Day: Spanish – Tuesday, September 18, at 1 p.m.  In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Instructor Viviana Andrade-Fullwood will give a fun and educational talk on Latin history and culture.  Participants will receive some basic instruction on vocabulary, conversation, and grammar.  Light refreshments will be served.  Register by Monday, September 17.
  • September Birthday Bash – Friday, September 21, at 1 p.m.  Enjoy the wonderful, acoustical music duo, Susan & Walt, as they perform a medley of songs featuring the big band era, easy listening, and gospel. You do not have to be celebrating a birthday to participate.  Register by Thursday, September 20.
  • “War Stories and Pizza” - Monday, September 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Veterans can gather and share stories from military service and enjoy a pizza lunch. Senior Center board member and U.S. Army veteran Buck Rodgers is the program facilitator.
  • Computer Lab General Use. Computers in the Senior Center’s Computer Lab are available for general use Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. patrons must sign in at the front desk to use the computers.  The Senior Center is not offering any computer classes during the summer.

Mark Your Calendar –
Cyber Security Awareness – Friday, October 12, at 1 p.m.  Cyber security refers to the various measures that help protect computers and mobile devices from harm. In an effort to promote awareness and education, Tim Wyatt, York County’s Deputy Director of Information Technology, will provide important tips and tricks to help protect you and your devices from scammers.  Register by Thursday, October 11.
