The York County Board of Supervisors is currently seeking applications from county residents to fill vacancies on the Board of Equalization (BOE). The BOE meets on an as needed basis and is tasked with hearing and considering a taxpayer’s appeal of their property’s real estate assessment as determined by the county’s Real Estate Assessor. The BOE is charged with increasing, decreasing, or maintaining the assessment. The next hearings will be held in early 2020 following the next assessment, which will be completed at the end of this year; however, members of the BOE must attend mandatory training in 2019.
Members of the Board of Equalization must be county landowners and state law requires at least 30 percent of the members be knowledgeable real estate professionals.
After receiving applications, the Board of Supervisors will review them and forward their selections to the Circuit Court Judge, who will make the official appointments.
York County citizens interested in applying for appointment to the Board of Equalization may obtain an application at the County Administrator’s Office at 224 Ballard Street in Yorktown, or by calling (757) 890-3320. Applications may also be obtained and filed using the county web site. Visit www.yorkcounty.gov and click on “How Do I,” then “Apply for A Board/Commission.”
