Registration for Safety Town Program Begins May 6

            Registration for the 25th session of York County’s award-winning Safety Town program, which teaches pre-kindergartners various aspects of life safety, begins Monday, May 6, at 8:15 a.m. for York County residents only.  Registration is available online (www.yorkcounty.gov/parksandrec) or in person at Parks and Recreation, 100 County Drive.  Non-county residents may begin registering on Monday, May 13, space permitting.  Safety Town is open to children entering kindergarten in the fall. The cost is $35 for County residents; $50 for non-County residents.
            This summer program seeks to reduce childhood injury by introducing children entering kindergarten to basic safety concepts through the use of interactive experiences.  Set up to resemble a small-scale town with portable buildings, roads, and street signs, the “Safety Town: learning environment is used as a practice area for several safety lessons. 
            Each session lasts one week, running Monday through Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m.  All lessons and activities relate to a specific topic each day:  Traffic and Pedestrian Safety, Fire Safety, Home Safety, and Personal Safety.  Parents accompany their children to Safety Town on Friday to attend a Safety Fair and Completion Ceremony.  Each child receives a certificate, t-shirt, backpack, and a bicycle helmet.  Safety Town can accommodate 50 children per week.
            Funding for Safety Town is provided by the generous contributions and sponsorships of area businesses, community agencies, civic organizations, County government, and individual citizens.

Program Seeks Volunteers

      
            York County’s popular “Safety Town” program, a summer activity for pre-kindergartners, has a number of volunteer opportunities available for middle and high school students, and adults.  This award-winning program seeks to reduce childhood injury by teaching kindergarten age children basic safety concepts through hands-on, interactive learning experiences.
            Youth and adult volunteers are needed to serve as “Leader Assistants” responsible for helping staff group leaders monitor and supervise an assigned group of ten children.  Volunteer hours are 8:30 to 11:45 a.m., Monday through Friday, according to the following schedule:

            All “Safety Town” volunteers receive a free t-shirt and recognition at the weekly completion ceremony.  Interest volunteers must be available to attend volunteer training on Tuesday, June 25, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Public Safety Building, 301 Goodwin Neck Road.
            Volunteers must commit to working one entire week of the program this summer.  Space is limited to 50 volunteer slots.
