Senior Center of York’s May Activities 

Diabetes Self-Management Workshop, Car Fit Event, and more!

     A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in May. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age.  To register for these activities, sign up in person at the Senior Center or call (757) 890-3444. 
     Along with our regular activities – Birthday Bash, AARP Driver Safety Program, and “War Stories and Pizza” - activities scheduled for May include:
 
  • “Diabetes Self-Management Workshop” – Begins Tuesday, May 7.  This free six-week program is held Tuesdays, May 7 through June 11, from 2 to 4:30 p.m.  Information provided includes preventing complications, menu planning, monitoring blood sugar levels, stress, exercise and relaxation, and more. Materials are provided to participants.  This program is co-sponsored by the Virginia Department of Health, Peninsula Agency on Aging, and York County Community Services. 
  • Peninsula Senior’s and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) Car Fit Event – Monday, May 13, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Car Fit is a free community-based educational program designed to help mature drivers assess how well they and their cars fit together and what action they might take to improve that fit.  A team of trained volunteers will complete a 12-point checklist for participants and their vehicles on items such as adequate space from the steering wheel and proper use of seat belts.  The comprehensive check takes about 20 minutes to complete.  The event is being held at the Denbigh Community Center parking lot, 15198 Warwick Boulevard in Newport News.  The Car Fit program was created by the American Society on Aging and developed in cooperation with AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Association.  For more information and to schedule your Cat Fit appointment, call (757) 890-3883.
  • AARP Driver Safety Program – Monday, May 13 (12:30 to 4:45) and Tuesday, May 14 (12:30 to 4:30).  Call the Senior Center to register or for more information.
  • Picnic in the Park – Friday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Join us for fun, food, and friends at the Yorktown waterfront.  Register now through May 14.  Suggested donation of $4 is payable when registering at the Senior Center. 
  • “Recycling Updates” – Thursday, May 30, 10 a.m.  Join us for recycling program updates presented by York County Department of Public Works’ Outreach Coordinator Samantha McNeil.
