York County Planning & Development Services is seeking public input on a proposed application to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for federal grant funding to construct sidewalks along portions of Route 17 and West Queens Drive. A public information meeting about the proposal is scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, in the East Room of York Hall (301 Main Street, Yorktown). County staff will be available to provide information, answer questions, and receive citizen comments.
The proposed Route 17 sidewalk would extended from the existing shared use path near the Villas at Yorktown development to the Yorktown Library, where it would connect with a new sidewalk that is being constructed as part of the library expansion project. The West Queens Drive sidewalk, located in the Queens Lake area in the northern portion of the County, would extend between Queens Lake Middle School and Royal Grant Drive.
The federal grant program provides funding for transportation projects that expand non-motorized travel choices, with a particular focus on pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The project selection process in Virginia is coordinated by VDOT in conjunction with the regional Metropolitan Planning Organizations. Federal funds cover 80 percent of the project cost with a minimum required local match of 20 percent.
