Preregistration Kick-off Event on June 21
Join us at the Tabb Library on June 21 from 10 a.m. to noon for our Summer Reading Registration Kick-off Event with the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit. The Sheriff's Office will be sharing crime prevention tips and handing out educational brochures, stickers, coloring books and child IDs. You'll have the opportunity to register for the summer reading challenge and receive your registration prize. Head Start and Family Focus will be there to share information and register children, too.
Access the Beanstack challenge site to register an individual or family. If you've previously enrolled in one of our reading challenges on Beanstack, log in using the same account information. If you don't remember your account information, select "Sign In" then "Forgot Your Username" or "Forgot Your Password." You can also participate through the free Beanstack Tracker app available in the Apple App Store or Google Play. Search for "York County Public Library" as your site.
Each age group has its own specific reading challenge goal to reach. All participants should keep track of their reading through our Beanstack site. Our community reading goal is to read 10,000 hours by or before August 13, 2021. If our Summer Reading participants reach this goal, staff at the Tabb Library will dress up like animals to celebrate the end of "Tails and Tales"!
There will be three youth challenges: Babies to Preschool (0-4), Elementary (5-12), and Middle/High School (13-18). Each challenge has its own reading goal:
Babies to Preschool: 4 hours
Elementary: 8 hours
Middle/High School: 15 hours
Registration, halfway, and completion prizes can be picked up at the Tabb Youth Services desk. During each week of the summer reading challenge, an activity kit will be available for each youth age group, while supplies last. There will also be a weekly incentive giveaway item. A limited number of registration prizes, weekly incentives, and activity kits will be available at the Grafton Annex once it opens for curbside service on July 6. Please call 757-890-3377 to check on availability before heading to the Grafton Annex. Halfway and completion prizes must be picked up at the Tabb Library.
Youth Services staff have put together suggested reading lists for preschoolers, elementary schoolers, and middle/high schoolers. Each reading list has been chosen with the weekly theme in mind using books in the Library's collection. Download the booklists or pick up a copy each week at the Youth Services desk.
Adults must read 15 hours to complete the challenge. Registration and completion prizes can be picked up at the Tabb Reference desk. A limited number of registration prizes will be available at the Grafton Annex once it opens for curbside service on July 6. Completion prizes must be picked up at the Tabb Library.
There will be a variety of both weekly and special in-person programming over the course of this year's summer reading event. Registration will be required for many, but not all events. Visit the Events Calendar for a complete list of programs and for registration requirements.
