1. What are the qualifications for Head Start?

Head Start is a free preschool program for children ages 3-5 years old. Eligible children and their families must live in York County and meet income or other eligibility criteria. Breakfast, lunch and snack (Full day programs only) are provided to students at no cost to the family.

2. Where are the programs located?

Head Start is located at the Griffin-Yeates Center, Bethel Manor and Yorktown Elementary Schools.

3. How do I get more information about these programs?

4. How often do the classes meet?

Head Start offers full day and half day classes Monday through Friday. Head Start students attend 5 days a week.

5. Will my child receive transportation to and from school?

The Griffin-Yeates Center has limited transportation available at no cost to families.

6. If I am a YCSD employee, but not a York County resident, is my child eligible for Head Start?

No, the child must reside in York County, regardless of where a parent is employed.

7. Is there a preschool curriculum?

Yes, Head Start uses the research-based Teaching Strategies GOLD by Creative Curriculum® that is aligned to the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and Virginia Early Learning and Development Standards. 

8. How are the children monitored for progress?

• Head Start has highly qualified, credentialed teachers who conduct ongoing assessments and data collection.
• Rising Kindergartners are assess using PALS twice a year.
• Children's progress is tracked using Teaching Strategies Gold and reported to parents on a quarterly basis.
