1. Who provides curbside trash collection in York County?

Republic Services is under contract with York County to provide this service.

4. How much does curbside garbage and recycling cost?

5. How much does it cost to bring trash or yard debris to Waste Management or the VPPSA facility?

York residents who are subscribers to the County's Basic Service for both solid waste and recycling collections and are current in payment for such services may also drop off their solid waste or personal yard waste at no charge.

6. Why didn't my trash get collected?

There are a variety of reasons that could be the cause of non-collection. Here are the most common: 

• Too close to another item for automated truck to collect (must be three feet away from any other item) 
• Must be out by 7 a.m. on your collection day (late set out)
• Overloaded (more than 260 pounds in weight)
• Overstuffed (lid not closed and trash would spill when lifted)
• Opening of the trash container not facing the street
• Have more containers than you are paying for (other containers not collected)
• See tag left on container for other reasons

7. How does my trash get collected on a holiday?

Our trash contractor observes at least the following holidays: New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Collections that fall on these holidays will be delayed by one day and each collection day that follows the holiday will be delayed by one day (for example, if the holiday is on a Tuesday, Tuesday's collections will be on Wednesday, Wednesday's will be on Thursday, etc.). All other holidays will have regular collection.

8. May I put yard debris in my trash container?

You may put bagged leaves or grass clippings in your container for pickup. Please make sure that you do not overload your container when doing so as the truck cannot lift the container if it weighs more than 260 pounds or if the lid is not closed on the container.

9. How do I dispose of my trash when not collected?

You may bring your trash to the Transfer Station at the Waste Management Center located at 145 Goodwin Neck Road during operating hours at no charge, provided you are on the York County trash service.

10. My trash container is missing or damaged. What should I do?

There could be many reasons why. The best way to let us know is to call Waste Management Office at 757-890-3780.

11. Where can I dispose of paint?

Latex Paint

• If the paint is old and dry, you can leave the lid off and dispose of in your regular trash.
• If the paint is still a liquid, you can add kitty litter or other absorbent material such as sawdust or mulch, and stir it well until it becomes very thick and will not drip or run.  Once you’ve done this, you can leave the lid off and dispose of it in your regular trash.  Please note:  this ONLY APPLIES to latex (water based) paint.

12. What happens to the old computers I take to a collection event?

VPPSA holds a total of 16 household chemical collection events per year and accepts a variety of paints, fuels, solvents, pesticides, automotive products and other chemicals from residents of Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County.  Many computer-related items accepted for recycling at these events as well.

• Since 2001, our contractor, Computer Recycling of Virginia, has erased every hard drive using software that meets or exceeds all industry standards, including the NIST 800-88. Once the wipe process is complete, any hard drive that fails the wipe process is physically destroyed.
• The mission of Computer Recycling of Virginia, Inc. (CRVA) is to place educationally–useful equipment into Virginia’s schools and non-profit organizations free of charge, while promoting electronics recycling throughout Virginia.

13. Can I put my tires out at the curb for pickup?

Tires cannot be picked up at the curb. You may bring tires to the Waste Management Center for disposal, up to five per day and there is a fee involved depending on tire size.

14. If I am a contractor bringing waste or yard debris from my residence, do I have to pay?

No, but you have to call one week in advance to the Waste Management Office so we can come out and see the items you want to dispose of while they are still on your ground (757-890-3780).

If approved, the disposal fees will be waived. In addition, you must deliver the material in person (i.e. no employees, neighbors, or family members not living in your household.) If you do not meet the above criteria, you will have to pay a disposal fee.

15. Why didn’t my recycling get picked up?

 There are many reasons why your recycling may not have been collected. Some of the most likely reasons include:

• “Operator error” – occasionally a driver will not see or for whatever reason, will miss the container.
• Late set out – was your container out by 7:00 a.m.?
• Overfilled container – was the lid able to close?
• Container was blocked – ideally, there should be a 3’ clearance around the toter so that the automated arm can pick it up. Was there a car or other object blocking the truck?

21. What forms or payment are accepted to bring items to the dump? (For example: Cash, Check or Credit Card)

Republic Services will accept credit only for dropping off trash – must have an account with them or a credit card; VPPSA will take cash, check, or credit at the VPPSA compost facility.

22. How do I get rid of my old television?

If it is still in working order, please consider donating it to a local charitable organization.  If not, you can bring it to the Waste Management Center, 145 Goodwin Neck Road, for disposal.  If you are scheduling a bulk item pickup at your home, you may include TVs with the remainder of your bulk items.  TVs are not accepted at our computer recycling events.  For more information, please call (757) 890-3780.

23. My propane tank is empty. What do I do with it?

If you need more propane, you can have the tank refilled or exchanged at a local retailer.  A propane tank exchange is less expensive than buying a new one. 

It is also possible to recycle your empty propane tank.  Some retailers will accept unused or partially used propane tanks and will recycle them.

If you are unable to take it to a retail location, Waste Management Division will accept completely empty propane tanks at the metal recycling area.

24. How do I get rid of a mattress/box spring?

If it is still in good condition and free of stains, rips, etc., please consider donating it to a local charitable organization.  If you are scheduling a bulk item pickup at your home, you may include a mattress/box spring as one of your bulk items.  If you subscribe to the County's curbside garbage service, you can bring it to the Waste Management Center, 145 Goodwin Neck Road, for disposal.  To schedule a bulk pickup, please complete a Customer Service Request at: Customer Service Request Portal, call the Waste Management Center at (757) 890-3780 or email waste@yorkcounty.gov.
