Responsibilities

Sheri Newcomb is the Acting Director of Community Services. Ms. Newcomb is responsible for overseeing multiple divisions and works with a large number of agencies dedicated to providing essential human, cultural, recreational, and other community services to the residents of York County. In addition to her supervisory role, Ms. Newcomb represents the County on local and regional boards and commissions to address various concerns, projects, or programs. 

Her portfolio includes the development, administration, and supervision of Children and Family Services, Parks and Recreation, Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization, and Juvenile Services. With a robust background in leadership and a commitment to community well-being, Ms. Newcomb plays a pivotal role in shaping and enhancing the services offered to the citizens of York County.

About Sheri Newcomb

Ms. Newcomb holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Christopher Newport University, with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation. She furthered her education by obtaining a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Old Dominion University.  In recognition of her leadership potential, Ms. Newcomb graduated from the Leadership Institute of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce in 2007. 

Ms. Newcomb embarked on her career journey in 1992 as a Licensed Therapeutic Recreation Specialist for Colonial Hospital. Subsequently, she assumed the role of Program Supervisor for school age programs and programs catering to individuals with special needs at the City of Newport News Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. During that time she served as the staff liaison to the Mayor's Committee on Disabilities and also contributed as an adjunct professor at Old Dominion University in the Department of Human Movement Services. 

In 2008, Ms. Newcomb transitioned to York County, initially as the Manager of Children and Family Services.   Recognizing her leadership capabilities, she was promoted to Deputy Director of Community Services in 2017.   Demonstrating continued excellence, Ms. Newcomb achieved the position of Acting Director of Community Services in October 2023.  Her career underscores her dedication to community services and making a positive impact in various capacities with in local government.
