LED Street Lighting Project

What is the LED Street Lighting Project?

York County, in partnership with Dominion Energy Virginia, has begun the conversion of existing public streetlights to efficient LED fixtures. This is a new Capital Improvement Program (CIP) project, and is expected to potentially take place over the span of several years.

What are LED lights?

LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, use solid-state technology to convert electricity into light. Put simply, LEDs are very small light bulbs that fit into an electrical circuit. Unlike traditional bulbs, they don’t have a filament that burns out and they don’t get very warm.

What are the benefits of converting public streetlights to LED?

LED fixtures have numerous benefits. LEDs have a much longer life than traditional lights, use less energy, offer enhanced visibility and light quality, while being less prone to maintenance problems.

LED fixtures also provide significant energy and cost savings. Once the full streetlight conversion is completed, the County expects to save several thousand dollars annually on its energy bill.
