Notary
The Library provides basic notary services free of charge by appointment at the Tabb Library and Yorktown Library. Call Tabb Reference at (757) 890-5120 or Yorktown Reference at (757) 890-5207 to request a notary appointment.
Documents
Individuals requesting notary services must sign and date the document(s) in the notary's presence. Only three simple documents may be notarized per person per day. The simple documents need to be written/officially translated into English. A simple document is defined as:
- a one to two page document with no more than two signers,
- a document with no more than two pages which need the notarial statement, and
- a document with clear indication as to where the notarial signature/seal should go.
Notary staff will not notarize: depositions, employment verification forms (e.g. I-9), estate documents (e.g. wills, probate), complex real estate documents (e.g. mortgages, closing documents), or true copies.
Witnesses
The Library will not provide witnesses, and witnesses may not be solicited from library staff members or patrons using the library. If a document must be witnessed, you must provide your own witnesses.
Valid Identification
The notary’s primary function is to be certain that the person requesting notary service is who they claim to be. Unless such person is known by the notary, identity shall be ascertained by examination of one or more of the following nine unexpired documents:
- a United States Passport
- a United States Passport Card
- a certificate of United States citizenship
- a certificate of naturalization
- a foreign passport
- an alien registration card with photograph
- a state issued driver's license
- a state issued identification card
- a United States military card
